KENEDY, Texas (KWTX) - On December 13, 2000, seven convicts broke out of a South Texas prison, leading to a six-week-long manhunt.

The escapees, later dubbed the “Texas Seven”, overpowered staff and prison guards in a maintenance shop where they worked, stealing guns, clothes, and a vehicle along the way.

After their escape, the men robbed a Radio Shack in Pearland and a sporting goods store in Irving.

During the robbery in Irving, they shot and killed Irving police officer Aubrey Hawkins before fleeing to Colorado.

Eventually, authorities found the group in various spots across Colorado, with one escapee taking his own life before he could be brought into custody.

After being caught, the six remaining members would be convicted and sentenced to death for the killing of Hawkins.
