Wisconsin woman killed in attack while on horseback ride in the Caribbean, family says
MADISON, Wis. (WMTV/Gray News) — A Wisconsin woman was killed while vacationing in the Caribbean earlier this month, police said.
Karen Johannsen was in Antigua and Barbuda when she was attacked on Dec. 19, the Royal Police Force of Antigua and Barbuda confirmed.
According to a press release from police, Johannsen was on a horseback trail ride on an Antigua beach when a man hit her on the head with an unknown object.
Johannsen was taken to the Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre in Antigua, where she was treated for severe head trauma.
On Dec. 21, Johannsen was airlifted to University Hospital in Madison, Wisconsin, where she died Friday, a week after she was injured.
A man is in custody, according to the Royal Police Force of Antigua and Barbuda. The force has not released his name.
The man in custody is an ex-boyfriend of Johannsen’s, her sister told WMTV.
Johannsen was the daughter of the owners of Johannsen’s Greenhouse, which was a staple in Madison for 50 years. The business closed its doors in 2013.
The case remains under investigation.
