(KWTX) - “Old man” Cyrus, a dog rescued from abusive and deplorable conditions in Killeen, Texas, is now “living his best life,” according to a social media post by the Austin-based rescue that nursed him back to health.

“Cyrus is a very good boy, and he’s spending his days surrounded by comfort, safety, and so much love,” the rescue wrote.

Police officers rescued the pit bull - known as Dubz at the time - from a residence in the 100 block of Gowan Drive back in July 2025.

The dog’s owner, who had refused orders to surrender it to authorities, and at one point allegedly told police it would be “God’s will” if the dog died, was arrested and charged with cruelty to a non-livestock animal.

“Despite his age, almost 14 or maybe already 14, Cyrus is truly living his best life. He’s with his foster dad, Joe, and his Great Dane sister, and he couldn’t be more loved,” the rescue said, acknowledging the community’s desire for an update on Cyrus.

According to an arrest warrant obtained by KWTX, Cyrus was housed “in a feces strewn environment with a known open wound” and his owner allowed him to “chew off its own hind foot.”

Community members in Killeen alerted authorities after Cyrus’ owner “posted photos and videos to social media of the dog, showcasing the obviously suffering canine and requesting donations,” the court documents state.

After his rescue and recovery, Cyrus now enjoys “scooting around the yard,” according to his new owner.

“He’s not the biggest fan of his wheelchair just yet, but we’re hopeful he’ll get more comfortable with it over time,” the rescue wrote in the social media post.

“He absolutely believes he should be the center of attention at all times, and honestly, he’s right. He loves food, he loves cuddles, and he loves everyone he meets.”
