The legacy of Pride continues as Waco High School heads back to school
WACO, Texas (KWTX) - The first day back brings a lot of excitement, and for students at Waco High, it also means stepping into a new chapter.
“I grew up around Waco High, and as long as I can remember, I’ve been involved in Waco High,” said Christian Aguilar, a Freshman at Waco High. “I feel like this has always been my home. And even with a new building, nothing has really changed; it’s just a new place.”
While the building may be new, the mission remains the same: supporting students and helping them grow.
“We’re here to help them, support them, encourage them, and motivate them. But more importantly, just to try to make them the most well-rounded individuals that they can be,” said Joseph Alexander, Principal of Waco High School.
The transition is emotional for staff, especially those who spent years in the old building.
“The old school was awesome, had a lot of great history, and we made a ton of great memories,” said Tyler Sage, Head Band Director for the Lion Pride Marching Band. “Seeing that band hall coming down brought some tears to us. But coming to the new space, we know we’re going to create a lot of new memories, and it’s just going to set us up for success moving forward.”
It’s also the first day for Waco ISD’s new superintendent, Dr. Tiffany Spicer, who joined the district in October.
“At the end of the day, all the work that’s been taking place over the last few years, and over the summer, and even the last few weeks, it comes down to this day and this year. And that’s about our students,” said Spicer.
Waco High is looking to the future, in the classroom and on the field.
“Change is alright,” said Coach Esrom Martinez, Head Football Coach. “Change is needed sometimes. And it’s just really good to have new facilities, new weight room, new coaches. We’re able to put our stamp on it, and I think these kids are excited to be part of it.”
With a brand-new space and a fresh start, Waco High is kicking off the school year with big energy, even bigger expectations, and tons of pride.
Because Lion Pride Runs Deep.
