Brame Park in Bellmead to close for $405,000 renovation project
BELLMEAD, Texas (KWTX) - On Jan. 12 Brame Park will close to the public for a four-month construction project that will bring $405,000 in improvements to the beloved community space.
The park, which has served as a gathering place for Bellmead residents and others across the county since the 1960s, will be getting shade structures, more lighting, and upgrades to it’s playground equipment.
“We strongly believe parks are an essential part of any community,” said City Manager Yost Zakhary. “It’s a beautiful park, nestled in the middle of a neighborhood… it’s safe and it’s clean.”
Funding and timeline
The city applied for a $150,000 matching grant from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department back in 2023, receiving approval about a year ago.
With the city’s half the total grant comes to $300,000. However, Zakhary says the city is adding an additional $105,000 for additional enhancements.
Construction is scheduled to begin at the start of the new year, with the park expected to reopen sometime in May if everything goes to plan.
“It should be closed for roughly four months, which should be perfect to open for the spring season,” Zakhary explained.
Planned improvements
Part of the renovation will include a full lighting circuit around the park to help people feel safer in the evening hours.
“It will be a full circuit around the park that in future years we can add additional lighting without having to go in and re-dig the ground,” Zakhary added.
The project will also add shade structures near the splash pads to provide relief for families during hot summer months.
“They’re very important in the summer, I mean splash parks are beautiful but when it’s 100 degrees outside the kids are having fun but those watching them are dying of heat,” Zakhary said.
Accessibility upgrades
The most significant improvements will focus on making the park more accessible to all visitors.
“New playground equipment, and the parking lot needed some ADA compliance upgrades and so did the restrooms,” Zakhary explained. “That’s very important and we have some that specifically use that park for that reason”.
Zakhary said he hopes this will be the first of several projects to improve the city’s other three parks.
