Copperas Cove ISD asking voters to approve $165M bond; not everyone is on board
‘We’ve got three buildings entering the end of their life cycles,’ superintendent says
COPPERAS COVE, Texas (KWTX) - The school district in Copperas Cove is asking voters to approve a massive bond after the last one failed at the ballot box more than a year ago.
CCISD is asking voters for to approve $165-million for much needed improvements around the district.
Superintendent Brent Hawkins told KWTX the improvements are absolutely necessary.
“Needs based on buildings that have outlived their life cycle,” said Hawkins. “Everything has a life cycle and we’ve got three buildings entering the end of their life cycles.”
A man in Copperas Cove paid for a billboard that states, “CCISD does have millions, ball fields approved, overcrowding? Maybe Later.”
KWTX spoke with the man but he didn’t want to speak on record.
He says he just wants to get what he feels is important information out to the voters.
KWTX asked Hawkins about the billboard claiming the district already has millions of dollars for construction projects.
A fact he doesn’t deny.
“It’s not enough money,” said Hawkins. “You say, it’s millions. It’s all relative to scale. Yes, there is $16-million that’s allocated to that but how much are we asking for in the bond? $165-million. So, you’re at about a tenth.”
The bond includes renovations to the high school, junior high school, Fairview Jewell elementary school, and a new CTE building.
So, what happens if voters don’t approve the bond?
“Our maintenance cost will go up and we will spend money fixing old schools,” said Hawkins. “Like I said, there’s really no other magic potion or any other avenue to go down.”
There is also a covered open-air sports pavilion included with the bond but not everything has to be voted on.
There are three separate propositions that add up the $165-million the district is asking for.
