WACO, Texas (KWTX) - As students are getting ready for summer, they are now able to view the preliminary scores for their End of Course STAAR tests, which were released on Friday, June 7th.

Last year the standardized test was changed to a new online format and students got to take the new exam online and got their scores last August.

The revised STAAR assessment tests students on their knowledge on different subjects with questions ranging from multiple choice, multiple response and open ended.

Student’s scores will be assessed to see if they approached the states standards, met them, mastered them or did not meet them at all

The Texas Education Agency found that across the state, most subject’s performance remained the same, but found a 4 percent increase in English 2, meaning 60 percent of Texas students are meeting the state’s standards.

Region 12′s Coordinator of Testing and Accountability, Haily Rambo, says that while the scores still need to be finalized, the preliminary results are promising.

“Overall, those EOC results were great, and I think teachers and schools and students have a lot to celebrate,” Rambo said.

In Central Texas, data from the TEA shows that many districts are now approaching the standards for English 2, Biology and Algebra 1.

This is Salado ISD’s second time taking the re-designed test and superintendent Dr. Michael Novotny says that he is happy to see his student’s progress.

“The majority of our grade levels and subject areas improved from the previous years and the vast majority of them are above the state averages.”

Novotny believes that this test format is more realistic for this generation’s digital natives.

“Whether it be taking a driver’s license, permit tests or taking the SAT tests, now college tests” Novotny explains. “More and more are going to technology, so getting them less reliant of the paper and pencil version of tests is a better preparation of them for the future.”
