Killeen barber school offers 25¢ haircuts for the back-to-school season
OG’s School of Hair Design holds an annual haircut discount event to support the community
KILLEEN, Texas (KWTX) - OG’s School of Hair Design offers 25¢ haircuts to Central Texas families for the ninth consecutive year.
The program is funded by donations collected by the barber school throughout the year. People have the option to pay above the $7 haircut charge. The school takes that money and puts it towards its 25¢ haircut program.
This program is meant to help parents prepare their kids to return to school. Killeen parent, Katie Grant, said it helps this time of year go smoother for her family.
“It’s a really easy way to get all the kids haircuts knocked out in one go and then also let people learn how to deal with little kids and getting their hair cut cause it can be really difficult to have them in a normal salon setting,” Grant said.
The idea came from Kevin Lane, the lead instructor at the school. He wanted to allow people the opportunity to receive a haircut at a price not seen in decades.
“I decided to bring it back,” Lane said. “It reminded me of when I was a little kid and my older brothers were cutting people’s hair in the neighborhood for 25 cents. So I decided to do it again in the community.”
Michael Thorpe, a 20-year regular, said the program is a vital part in building the community.
“A program like this shows us that there are folks in the community that want to use their abilities and gift that they’ve been given to help each other and that’s what’s great about it,” Thorpe said.
Aug. 13 is the last day of the discounted haircut promotion.
