WACO, Texas (KWTX) - Midway ISD held a Back to School Summit for district teachers and staff at Midway High School.

This conference-style event featured in-district educators teaching their peers with about 1,300 people in attendance.

The district focused on the theme ‘Leading the Way’, with 240 empowering sessions. Teachers could sign up for any sessions and times that interested them and applied to their classroom needs.

Superintendent Chris Allen said most of the 120 presenters at the summit came straight from the district’s schools.

“It is our teachers learning from the best and the brightest and on specialized topics from other teachers,” Allen said. “It’s a great value in that we don’t spend a lot of money bringing a bunch of external facilitators, but it’s also great because it builds camaraderie across the district.”

With staff ranging from elementary to high school all under one roof, community bonding and district engagement were at a high.

“There’s so much that we’re responsible for teaching the young people,” Allen said. “But at the end of the day, it’s about the heart of the teacher connecting with the heart of a young person in such a way their mind grows and develops, and that heart starts today.”

Thanks to many sponsorships and generous volunteers, the summit smoothly equipped teachers with the heart and talent needed for the school year to come.

Midway ISD will open doors to students again beginning Wednesday, August 14.
