Belton, Texas (KWTX) - The bell rang early Tuesday morning at Belton High School: school is back in session!

Superintendent Dr. Malinda Golden says the district plans to continue preparing students for all the expectations of the workforce before they graduate.

A program unique to Belton is called Journey of a Graduate Competencies. This teaches students perseverance, adaptability, effective communication, collaboration, critical thinking and empathy.

“Starting last year going into this year we’re really focused on designing experiences in the classroom that really require students to critically think. always been the goal but really being really intentional around designing work that will grow those competencies as well as academic knowledge and skills,” Dr. Golden said.

We’re told the district had over 3,300 college hours earned just last year.

As for challenges the district has faced, addressing their cell phone policy.

“They [students] weren’t allowed to have them out while they were in class. now some teachers did have storage devices if they felt more comfortable with that but our process was keep them in your backpacks because it was important to our parents that they have access to their students after the school day whether they’re on a school bus or walking home.”
