Fort Hood kids collecting donations for Kerr County flood relief
FORT HOOD, Texas (KWTX) - Folks all over Central Texas have been collecting donations and money to help those affected by recent floods.
News of the devastating floods in Kerr County didn’t take long to reach kids on Fort Hood.
“I listened to my parents talk about it,” said 8-year-old Aurora Rosolowski.
“I saw it on the news with my parents,” said 13-year-old Caleb Williams.
“On YouTube, I just scrolled all the way down and I just saw it,” said 7-year-old Jacqueline Rodriguez-Davis.
It was tragic news that hit them all pretty hard.
“Sad for the people that lost their stuff,” said 8-year-old Isabella Aguilar.
“Kind of scared,” said Rosolowski.
“Scared but also, I felt bad for the people that got to go through that because, that’s just not fair,” said 12-year-old Mia Doyles.
Seeing the devastation in Kerr County and hearing how the kids felt about it, inspired the staff at Muskogee School Age Care to collect donations so the kids on post could help out.
“A lot of the kids have been really eager,” Kelly Quinn, Facility Director, Muskogee School Age Care on Fort Hood. “They even go through there stuff at home to see if there’s anything they can donate, that’s been lightly used. So, we’ve even had kids say like, they want to go through they’re closets and see if there’s t-shirts or toys they don’t really use. So, they can donate to the children as well.”
Now other Youth Centers and School Age Care facilities on post are joining in on the relief effort.
A small thing 13-year-old Williams says they can do on post to help others in need.
“Knowing that the people that were in danger or can’t really do anything for themselves, you can do your best and send out certain resources to help them,” said Williams.
Along with donations, they are sending they love and messages of hope.
“I just want to remind people that we are not defined by what we have lost but by how we set back and come back from it,” said Doyles.
“Be safe,” said Rosolowski.
“And, be brave,” said 7-year-old Rodriguez-Davis.
They are collecting donations until July 18th and anyone looking to drop stuff off, can take items to any Youth Center or School Age Care facility on Fort Hood that is open during the summer.
