‘We’re ready’: Thousands of Fort Hood soldiers prepare for deployment to Europe
FORT HOOD, Texas (KWTX) - Thousands of Fort Hood soldiers are gearing up for a rotation to Europe.
Troopers in the 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, known as Greywolf, are packing their bags to help European allies.
Cannon fire in Fort Hood Thursday signaled the casing of 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team’s unit flags known as colors.
“Now in the coming weeks, troopers of the Greywolf will deploy to Europe in support of Operation Atlantic Resolve,” said Maj. Gen. Thomas Felty, 1st Cavalry Division Commanding General.
“Since Russia’s aggression in Crimea in 2014, this Division has provided forces in steadfast support against instability in Europe.”
4,000 soldiers and 1,000 pieces of equipment are deploying for this rotation.
“Where our mission will be to deter aggression, to support our allies, train with and develop interoperability with our allies and partners in Europe,” said Col. Michael Zeigelhofer, Commander of 3ABCT, 1st Cavalry Division.
A mission they have been training for a couple of years for.
Both through gunnery, comms, and other training at Fort Hood and large-scale combat training at the National Training Center in California.
“We train to the fullest standard,” said CSM Alejandro Pulido, Greywolf Command Sergeant Major. “What we’ve learned from that is the communication aspect and pieces to be able to work with our allies and partners in Europe. So, we’ve learned how to actually bridge the gap and be able to work with them during our time in Europe.”
Extensive training doesn’t prepare you for every aspect of deployment.
“The team is trained and ready,” said Col. Zeigelhofer. “We’re certainly sad to be leaving our families and friends behind.”
That’s why leadership has a message for any troopers deploying for the first time.
“Thank you for what you do,” said CAM Pulido. “Thank you to your families. We understand that you might be anxious but don’t be. Don’t be nervous. You are trained and you are proficient.”
“Enforce high standards in discipline because every action that they take and they do over there, matters,” said Col. Zeigelhofer. “As the represent not only themselves, but our brigade, and the 1st Cavalry Division, and ultimately our country.”
The last time Greywolf deployed to Eastern Europe was their previous rotation in 2022.
