No Trader Joe’s: Canales Furniture taking over old Big Lots! building

WACO, Texas (KWTX) - A Canales Furniture store is taking over the building vacated by Big Lots! in the 4900 block of Waco Drive, KWTX has confirmed.

Crews on Monday were seen painting over the building and a Canales Furniture cargo van was parked outside the building. KWTX has confirmed the store’s location on Valley Mills Drive will close when the new location opens sometime in January 2026.

There had been speculation the site, right next to a Barnes & Noble, could have been the future home of a Trader Joe’s grocery store.

Earlier this year, Cody Powell, a real estate agent from Brentwood Commercial, stirred up public support on Facebook for Trader Joe’s to lease the space at the old Big Lots! building in the Richland Hills neighborhood.

The nearest Trader Joe’s stores are located in Dallas and Austin - about an hour and a half drive away from the Waco area.
