‘I was scared, I still am’: Morgan’s Point Resort volunteer firefighter loses home to fire day after Christmas

TEMPLE, Texas (KWTX) - It’s not often that you hear of a firefighter being on the other end of the tragedy but a Morgan’s Point Resort volunteer firefighter just lost everything to a home fire, the day after Christmas.
“It was a family home,” says Jacob Mahood as he looked at ash that used to be generations worth of memories.
The home has stood tall for decades and proudly house generations of the Mahood family. The home is now a shell of its former glory.
Mahood says his dad was working on the home at the time when he heard a strange noise “and he looked over to see the shed on fire. He tried to put it out but it jumped over to the house and started taking over the house.”
The duo has been working to fix the home and have spent months giving it new life for the next generation.
From the flooring to the electrical wiring and plumbing, they learned how to do it all and did it with their own hands and money.
“We were almost done with the house and everything we’ve worked for just went down the drain,” Mahood says.
Everything was brand new and now they have to start over, this time from ground zero.
Mahood is a volunteer firefighter for Morgan’s Point Resort and he says facing fires for work, doesn’t prepare you for being on the other end of the hose.
“I was scared. I still am. I’m still trying to process it but all we can do is take it one day at a time,” he says.
The community, the family says, has been a cornerstone for them. From his crew at the department to neighbors and strangers. And even in the midst of tragedy, they are already thinking of ways to pay it forward.
“We made a plan that after we get back on our feet, we’re going to try and do something for the community for helping us. We don’t know what the game plan is yet but we are going to do something,” Mahood explains.
Right now, they are just cleaning up the debris but are in for a long road to rebuild.
A GoFundMe is open to help them get back on their feet, if you would like to help serve someone who is always ready to serve you.
