Waco girl, 6, crowned grand champion of HOT Fair & Rodeo’s Mutton Bustin’ contest
WACO, Texas (KWTX) - A local 6-year-old who loves arrowhead hunting and horseback riding - but also dresses, bows and shopping - is the overall winner of this year’s ever-so-popular Mutton Bustin’ contest at the Heart O’ Texas Fair and Rodeo.
Reeves Goss, 6, of Waco, is the Grand Champion of the contest, which included more than 400 contestants over the week-long event.
“I was excited,” Reeves said.
Mutton Bustin is a rodeo event where kids ages four to seven ride a sheep and try to hold on as long as possible.
The pint-sized cowboys and cowgirls must weigh 55 pounds or less at the time of their ride.
Reeves first ride was Saturday in which she placed 4th with a score of 82.5.

That ride was enough to qualify Reeves for the finals on Sunday, and she came to win.
Reeves first ride Sunday was an impressive 98 as she made it all the way to the end of the arena where volunteers had to lift her off.
That laned her in a ride-off with another top competitor.
She once again hung on all the way to the end of the arena fence and scored another 98.
“I don’t know how I did it,” Reeves said. “I just tried.”
For her win, Reeves was given both a silver and gold buckle.

“It was fun,” she said.
Reeves is the daughter of Jill and Cameron Goss, both lifelong Wacoans and owners of Bowen Electric.
She is the granddaughter of Grant and Karen Goss and Glenda and Jim Bowen, all of Waco.
Reeves comes by her love of all things country naturally; she is the niece of well-known country and red dirt singer and songwriter Wade Bowen.
