WACO, Texas (KWTX) - A local nonprofit is preparing to build apartments for seniors and those with disabilities in need of housing.

Friends for Life is a nonprofit that empowers seniors and those with disabilities to live their best lives as independently as possible.

The group offers help by providing adult day care, children and youth services, and money management guidance among other things.

One of the greatest needs still unfulfilled, they say, is housing.

The nonprofit is planning new construction on South 18th Street in Waco of 65 apartments which will included 45 one bedroom apartments and 20 two bedroom apartments.

Executive Director Inez Russell says the community needs more options, more services and more help for the population they serve.

“I’m told that over 4,000 seniors are on waiting lists for safe places to live,” Russell said. “While several organizations have been working on this problem, the need is outgrowing their efforts.”

Russell says the population they serve is growing rapidly.

“Both the senior population and those who have disabilities is growing in number so the need for our services is growing very quickly.”

Friends for Life hopes to break ground on the apartments in late 2026.

Another new service Friends for Life is offering are reading labs and services that connect families who have children with special needs with resources.

“I’m so grateful for what God is doing at Friends for Life,” Russell said.

Friends of Life is this week’s TFNB Your Bank for Life Charity Champion meaning they will received leadership training and a free marketing campaign.

They will also be honored at this weekend’s home Baylor football game.
