WACO, Texas (KWTX) - Dallas Cowboys Quarterback Dak Prescott led the Cowboys to victory over the Eagles Sunday in a showdown in which the player’s cleats carried a lifesaving message.

Prescott teamed up with Baylor Scott and White to promote early cancer screenings by wearing the message on his cleats during the annual “My Cause My Cleats” initiative.

My Cause My Cleats is a player-led initiative where players, coaches and staff wear custom-designed cleats to spotlight the causes and nonprofits they care about most.

Prescott’s mom, Peggy,  passed away from colon cancer in 2013 when the player was just 20-years-old.

“This is so near to my heart after losing my mom to colon cancer,” Prescott said.

Prescott said he wants to remind people that early screenings can save your life.

“One in three people who skip cancer screenings say it’s because they don’t see the signs so this year my cleats are challenging you to take a closer look,” Prescott said.

Dr. Bill McCunniff with Baylor Scott and White says having such a star behind such a big cause is a win for everyone.

“Just having him, his voice out there, just the awareness that he brings to so many people, men women,” McCunniff said.  “The big point is just get your cancer screenings early.  Detect it early while it’s still small.   You can do something early. ”

Prescott also founded The Faith Fight Finish Foundation created to honor his mom and his brother, Jace, who died by suicide.

In addition to raising awareness about early screenings, Prescott’s asking for donations to the foundation which empowers individuals and communities to find strength through adversity.

Baylor Scott and White has a link on their website as part of Prescott’s campaign where you can check which screenings may be right for you.

Waco native Andrew Billings who plays for the Chicago Bears chose the Billings Family Find-A-Way Foundation for his cause on his cleats.

The foundation focuses on youth development and educational opportunities primarily within Waco ISD.
