Light the World Giving Machine offers Central Texans a new way to donate to local charities
WACO, Texas (KWTX) - There’s a unique way you can donate to local charities this holiday season all with the push of a button.
The Light the World Giving Machine is in an initiative by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
The machine, which just opened Wednesday in Spice Village in downtown Waco, allows people to donate tangible items to help those in need by selecting things to pay for like a stuffed animal or forensic exam for the Advocacy Center for Crime Victims and Children or funding an overnight stay for families at The Ronald McDonald House in Temple.
The other local charities featured include Wreaths for Vets in Killeen, Friends for Life in Waco and local chapters of Special Olympics.
The gifts range in price from $9 to $150.
Aleigh Ascherl is the executive director of the Advocacy Center and said she loves the uniqueness of The Giving Machine.
“I’ve said it over and over. It’s such a unique idea and I think important idea to provide people with ways, interactive ways to give back to their community and beyond and so we’re so thankful for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the ways that they have partnered with us, included us in this experience,” Ascherl said.
Friends for Life, a local nonprofit that cares for seniors and those with disabilities, is asking for people to donate to provide needs including blankets for seniors, small heaters and classes to teach clients to read.
Inez Russell is the founder and executive director of Friends for Life.
Russell said she believes the kiosks will encourage young and old to think of others during the holiday season.
“I think it’s kind of a clever way to introduce children to giving to people that need help,” Russell said. “I think it’s a reminder for older people that even in this time of year that we’re giving to people for Christmas, we can stop and do something for people who don’t have family to remember them.”
The Giving Machine is located inside Spice Village, which is a retail shopping destination in downtown Waco with over 40 boutiques inside.
The machine will be on hand until Dec. 30.
