Tennyson Middle School Choir performs with Wade Bowen at sold-out Christmas concert
WACO, Texas (KWTX) - A local middle school girls’ choir got the chance of a lifetime sharing the stage with a nationally known professional touring artist.
The Tennyson Middle School Choir in Waco ISD performed with Waco native singer and songwriter Wade Bowen at his sold-out Christmas concert at the Waco Hippodrome this week.
The choir performed “Mary Did You Know.”
They then joined Bowen singing “Silent Night” with the artist.
Jacob Garcia is the choir director and said his choir is known for community performances, but this one was different.
“We have performed at the Heart of Texas Rodeo. We’ve gone to nursing homes. We’ve done some various Christmas events but being invited on stage with a professional touring musician was just so amazing and to give that opportunity to our students was really, really neat,” Garcia said.
The girls ‘Varsity Treble Choir consists of 38 singers in 7th and 8th grade.
The singers audition for the spots by singing a prepared song and sight reading a piece they’ve never seen before.
“The Tennyson Middle School Choir has a long tradition of choral excellence,” Garcia said.
Greer Bledsoe is a 7th grader and said getting the chance to sing with Bowen was something she’ll never forget.
“It was such a cool experience to have,” Greer said. “It was so fun to get to perform with a touring artist. It was really cool.”
Garcia said the girls were invited to perform by the Bowen Family Foundation, a foundation founded by Bowen to help families and children.
He said the foundation rolled out the red carpet for the youth performers inviting them to soundcheck, feeding them dinner and giving them free tickets to the show.
The girls got a standing ovation from the crowd.
“I think our singers will be remembering this for the rest of their lives,” Garcia said.
