WACO, Texas (KWTX) - We would like to congratulate Waco ISD Communications Departments for winning multiple Texas School Public Relations Association Star Awards at the Organization’s Annual Conference last night.

Waco ISD reportedly led the state with 29 total star awards, earning 13 Gold awards, 10 Silver, 2 Bronze, 2 Best of Show Honors and 2 Crystal awards.

And we want to give a shoutout to the 14 contestants that competed in the school wide spelling bee at River Valley Middle school in Midway ISD!

These spellers were great, there’s no way I would have been able to hang.

Anaya Valappil won the contest after close to two hours of spelling and Yash Magar came in second. Those two spellers will now advance to the Central Texas Regional spelling bee on March 24th.

They will then have a chance to qualify for the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

It was a pleasure to announce the bee last night!

Another shoutout to two Killeen ISD students for being named the National Merit Scholar Finalists.

They are John Beliveau and Kiera Sandifer, seniors at Harker Heights High School.

This honor comes with the opportunity to earn scholarship money to be awarded later this Spring.

To be selected, you have to submit academic record, school and community activities, leadership characteristics and already have awards earned.

Beliveau and Sandifer now await the final round of scholarship selections, which will be announced in April.
