Classroom Champions: Riesel’s Landri Pick
RIESEL, Texas (KWTX) - Riesel softball star Landri Pick has one goal in mind for her senior year: state championship.
“It would just be great. I’ve always wanted to get Coach Johnson a state title,” said Pick. “And that’s really just been my main goal since junior high softball. This is the last year to do it, so we got to go out with a bang.”
The reigning District MVP is one of the best softball players in the state of Texas. Her head coach Don Johnson says she’s one of the best softball players he’s ever coached.
“She’s one of the faces of Lady Indian softball,” said Johnson. “When you go to an opposing team and they haven’t seen her yet, you know the first thing they ask you is ‘Which one is Pick?’ She’s a game changer, she’s the real deal.”
“My hitting coach always said good hitters make adjustments in between games, great hitters make adjustments in between at bats and pitches,” said Pick. “I’ve really kind of learned through that and it’s been a great way to help me get there.”
Pick is also on track to graduate as class salutatorian. She’s already accepted a full-ride scholarship to play softball at Georgia Tech University where she plans to earn a degree in engineering.
“I’ve always kind of wanted to get away from home. I’ve wanted to go somewhere where no one knows me and start fresh, just to start new,” said Pick. “I want to major in aerospace engineering, so they’re one of the top programs in the nation for that, so that was one of the key factors. And the coaches there are just great. They’re already like family to me.”
“I think she’ll be a big impact to Georgia Tech,” said Johnson. “And the thing about Landri is, as good as she is on the field, she’s just as good off the field. What you see is what you get every day. She’s that kid you just want to be around. She’ll be successful at Georgia Tech.”
Congratulations to Landri Pick, you’re a Classroom Champion!
