Classroom Champions: Lake Belton’s MyKenna Johnston
TEMPLE, Texas (KWTX) - Competition runs in MyKenna Johnston’s family. It has driven her to succeed both on the court in volleyball and in the classroom at Lake Belton.
“I think it was my parents,” said Johnston.
“They are very competitive people. And my sister played volleyball so I always wanted to be better than her. And I’m just a competitive person in general.”
That competitive drive helped lead the Bronco’s volleyball team to their best finish in the young school’s history, making it to the regional semifinals.
“It was really fun,” said Johnston. “It was sad not doing so well in that game. But it was fun making school history.”
“Especially in those three playoff games that we had, just the family atmosphere and the community atmosphere was so special,” said Lake Belton Head Volleyball Coach Allison Waits.
“And that was really driven by our senior class. MyKenna being such a huge part of that. And their families. Not only was it far for us to go in season, but just the atmosphere was amazing and she was such a big part of that for sure.”
MyKenna has seen just as much success in the classroom as she has on the court. She currently has a 5.7 GPA and is ranked in the top 10% of her class at Lake Belton. She says success in athletics and academics go hand in hand.
“I think just having a drive for yourself,” said Johnston.
“I think seeing a future you want and putting that future in your heart and soul, I think it makes people really want to go, if that make sense. Seeing others around you and seeing their different lives and seeing how yours is comparative to theirs. And seeing what you’re going to do and they’re going to do and the different paths just keeps me going.”
