Classroom Champions: Midway's Kenna McKenzie
WACO, Texas (KWTX) - Midway volleyball super star Kenna McKenzie is known for her kill shot.
“Definitely one of the most dominant players at the net in the Central Texas area,” said Midway volleyball head coach Ryan Porter.
The District 12-6A MVP has established herself as one of the state’s most elite players. Her 554 kills this year helped land her a scholarship to go play volleyball at Texas Tech University next fall.
“I’ll push through everything, all the hardships that come with it,” said McKenzie. “I’m just really excited for the next chapter.”
She’s not just a D1 bound athlete, she’s also ranked in the top 12 percent of the extremely competitive Midway senior class. McKenzie has a 4.0 GPA.
“For me, I’m kind of a perfectionist and I like to make things perfect or just strive to be the best I can be,” said McKenzie. “It kind of feels like my duty now to keep getting good grades. And also, I like to see all A’s on my report card, so that’s the main thing really.”
Before she heads off to Lubbock, McKenzie hopes to be remembered as a role model for the younger players following in her footsteps.
“I hope people just remember me as being kind and being someone they can reach out to if they were ever in need,” said McKenzie. “I love volleyball and I know a lot of people know me as playing volleyball. It’s truly not all I do, it’s just something I do.”
“Anytime you’re that kind of student athlete, you carry that kind of GPA and class ranking as well as having the opportunity to play D1, you’re gonna look up to those players,” said Porter. “She’s one of the best teammates we’ve had and all of our young ladies are looking forward to hopefully trying to take her spot.”
Congratulations to Kenna McKenzie, you’re a Classroom Champion!
