WACO, Texas (KWTX) - Joseph McMurtry excels in everything he does. From football to baseball to the classroom, Joseph stands above the rest. The Troy senior is currently ranked first in his class. He attributes his work ethic to his parents.

“My parents pushed me throughout elementary school, middle school, high school to get good grades,” said McMurtry. “I was always told grades come before sports.”

Not only was Joseph named the District 11 3A offensive player of the year in football, but he was also an Academic All-State selection for Football and Basketball. The Baseball selection is surely on its way.

“He comes from a good family,” said Troy head baseball coach Steve Sebesta. “A hard-working family. There is just a high expectation placed on him, and I think he tries his best to live up to that and I think he does a good job of handling the pressure that comes with that. But I think just expectation. I think he has a high expectation of himself.”

Joseph has met and even exceeded those expectations. But before he moves on to play baseball at temple college, Joseph hopes to leave a legacy at troy.

“That was kind of our goal last year through football, basketball, baseball,” said McMurtry. “Baseball has always had success. Just kind of carry that on. But basketball and football, the goal last year when the new coaches came in was to leave a mark. Start anew.”
