Classroom Champions: Salado’s Mason Olson
SALADO, Texas (KWTX) - Salado senior Mason Olson is living the dream.
He’s grown up and spent his entire childhood in the town he loves so much.
“I mean it’s awesome,” said Olson. “I’ve watched people come and go. I’ve seen my fair share of awesome stories and it just feels really good to be getting to live that out and live that kind of childhood. That childhood hometown story.”
On the football field, Olson helps lead a very talented Salado defensive unit. As a safety, he’s a true general in the secondary. His coaches say his football IQ is what makes him so great.
“He’s a guy we lean on on the defense to communicate everything,” said Salado head coach Ricky Beaty. “Obviously being smart in the classroom lots of times translates to being smart on the field. I’m super thankful to have a guy that’s that intelligent in the back end of our defense that can kind of run the show.”
“I like the takeaways,” said Olson. “Somebody throws a ball deep to try and score a touchdown and try to win a game and (when) you take it away, it’s awesome to look at your home crowd and see everybody’s reaction when you do something big like that.”
It probably comes to no surprise that Olson is a straight A student. He’s ranked second in his and plans to attend Texas A&M University next fall to study ocean engineering.
“I’ve got family that’s been to A&M and I’m excited,” said Olson. “I’m looking at the Corps of Cadets. There’s just a lot of culture and a lot of opportunity there.”
Olson’s biggest goal for the year is to be a role model for the kids that will soon fill his shoes when he graduates.
‘If anything, I want to be remembered for my kindness,” said Olson. “I’d like people to look back and strive to be the senior that I was for them. I want them to be that person for somebody else.”
Congratulations to Mason Olson, you’re a Classroom Champion!
