WACO, Texas (KWTX) - Midway senior Hunter Kolb is a young man who knows what he wants to do.

“Everyday I wake up and I think about the Air Force academy,” said Kolb.

“It’s what I want to be when I get older, I want to grow old doing it. But it means a lot to me have this opportunity to do something like this.”

Kolb plays football and baseball at Midway, but his real passion may be up in the skies, as he is well on his way to getting his pilot’s license

“I love flying,” said Kolb.

“I love learning new stuff about aircraft. And it’s really fun. It’s a learning process. It teaches you a lot of responsibilities, and things that can not only help you when flying but in life as well.”

Hunter is trying to follow in his brother Marshall’s footsteps by attending the Air Force Academy. But this has been Hunter’s dream for a long time.

“My dad would take me and him to air shows to watch the F-18 Blue Angels and the F-16s,” said Kolb.

“Seeing those pilots in their uniform(s), it instilled a drive in me. It made me open my eyes to what my future could look like.”

And Hunter’s coaches see that drive and determination.

“His work ethic is second to none,” said Midway head football coach Joe Gillespie.

“The thing that I’ll remember about Hunter is just he’s a leader, but he’s a leader in a lot of different ways.”

“I love to hear the other things that he does away from school,” said Midway head baseball coach Eddie Cornblum.

“Like he’s lifting all the time away from everybody else. Doing his own thing. Building himself up and getting himself prepared. Not just for the season, but what he does after high school.”

And he’ll need to continue that work ethic given what he wants to study.

“I’m wanting to get my degree in aerospace engineering,” said Kolb.

“So if I’m not flying, I know how to work on aircraft. I know how aircraft work. So just being able to have something that I can do other than flying.”

Congratulations to Hunter Kolb, your Classroom Champion.
