BELTON, Texas (KWTX) - Lake Belton senior Kaitlyn Hutchins’ life has been all about resilience.

“She is an overcomer and one of the strongest people I’ve ever been around,” said Lake Belton head volleyball coach Allison Waits.

Hutchins was born with complete deafness in her right ear and just about 40 percent function in her left ear, creating many difficulties for her as an outside hitter.

“I do have some difficulties at times,” said Hutchins. “It’s just become a part of my life. I’ve definitely grown accustomed to it, and I can’t imagine what life would be like without it.”

Though, it didn’t stop Hutchins from setting five Lake Belton school volleyball records and being named District 16-5A Most Valuable Player.

“I think I worked super hard,” said Hutchins. “And a lot went into becoming (District MVP). I think I earned it. I think I did really well this year. I have to give kudos to my teammates because I really wouldn’t be here without them and all the work they have put in too.”

On top of her impressive career on the court, Hutchins is ranked 17th in a class of over 500 students. She’s also a member of the National Honor Society as well as Fellow of Christian Athletes.

“I always tell her she has a sweet spirit,” said Waits. “Every day, she was happy to be here. I can’t think of Kaitlyn having a bad mood. She brightens my day, she brightens all of our days. I think I’m gonna miss just seeing her every morning.”

Next fall, Hutchins is taking her talents to the University of Northern Colorado where she’ll play volleyball and major in business. She aspires to own her own business one day and wants to be known and remembered as a team player.

:I think I just want to be remembered as someone who never gave up,” said Hutchins. “I just want to be remembered as that person that lifted up their teammates and someone that they can always look up to.”

Congratulations to Kaitlyn Hutchins, you’re a Classroom Champion!
