JONESBORO, Texas (KWTX) - Jonesboro senior Layden Nichols is someone the younger generation would call a “chiller.”

I think the best way to figure out if you want to do something is to just jump into it,” said Nichols. “If it doesn’t work out, it doesn’t work out. I try not to care too much, I just try to go with the flow with everything.”

Whether he cares or not, Layden excels in absolutely everything he does. He’s an All-State football player and he’s a standout in basketball, baseball, and track. On top of it all, Layden is expected to graduate as his class valedictorian.

“It’s really my mom, she always told me if I kept above a 95 in all of my classes, she would give me 20 bucks,” said Nichols. “So I just kept on racking all that cash.”

“You won’t find anyone in our district who would say a bad word about Layden Nichols,” said Jonesboro head basketball coach Layden Nichols. “Just a phenomenal young man. He really takes care of his business in the classroom. He’s always one that you pretty easily identify early on as a leader on the team and a leader in the school.”

Layden plans on attending Texas State University next fall to study mechanical engineering. In the summers, you could find him mowing lawns all across the Jonesboro and Gatesville area. He is also very active in his church.

“I definitely want to be remembered as someone who was faithful to God and someone who did what they were supposed to do,” said Nichols. ‘I want to set a good example for others.”

Congratulations to Layden Nichols, you’re a Classroom Champion!
