CORYELL COUNTY, Texas (KWTX) - After a heated meeting at the Coryell County Commissioners Court on Sept. 9, commissioners got to work changing a budget proposal the community wasn’t happy with.

More than 150 people showed up to the commissioners court meeting Tuesday to voice their concerns about a proposed budget that would have raised property taxes by 21%.

The court got to work making cuts to bring that number down and some people returned on Sept. 10 to learn more about the changes made to the budget proposal.

Nearly $1.5-million was cut from the budget and that brought the tax increase to less than 9 percent.

“I really think we finished up with a good budget,” said Roger Miller, Coryell Count Judge.

“I’ll never tell you it’s a great one. There are imperfections in it but if I’m going tell you that this is something that I think the court supports as a whole, yes. It is a good budget.”

The most significant cuts were made to the sheriff’s department, jail operations, and the road and bridge department.

The Commissioners Court plans to vote on a new budget proposal at their next regular meeting on Sept. 23.

The vote will take place following another public hearing to discuss the new budget proposal.
