WACO, Texas (KWTX) - This week wraps up NICU awareness month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about the care of premature infants and dedicated medical teams that support them.

Baylor Scott and White in Waco and Temple are celebrating the month by sharing photographs of some of the tiniest Texans who have been cared for in their high-level units.

Baylor Scott and White is the only local hospital between Waco and Austin that has a Level III, which is in Waco, and Level IV unit, located at McLane Children’s in Temple, to care for the most critical of babies.

Temple has 51 beds and takes care of approximately 800 babies a year.

Waco has 30 beds and provides medical care for 450 babies a year.

Doris Taylor is a registered nurse there.

“The most rewarding part of my job is seeing patients come back to visit,” Doris said. “Just the other day we have one of the smallest ones that I’ve seen come back and he had just turned 18 years old.”

It’s a feeling echoed by a nurse named Ashlyn.

“It is the most rewarding job in the world being able to help our teeny tiny miracle babies grow and watch them reach each milestone until they’re big and strong enough to go home wit their families.”

Baylor Scott and White says they plan to have a reunion for babies, their families and healthcare workers coming up in October.

Ascension Providence in Waco also provides care with a Level II unit.
