InvestigateTV+: Should workplaces have naloxone on site for overdoses?
(InvestigateTV) — Some businesses are increasing access to an opioid overdose reversal drug, and now, others are pushing for more industries to follow suit.
In this episode of InvestigateTV+, we examine:
- How companies are adding naloxone to workplace first aid kits to combat overdose deaths, particularly in construction, where workers face the highest overdose rates.
- Why young adults under 25 face the highest risk for intimate partner violence.
- Self-defense classes in North Carolina where women learn to fight instead of freeze, with training offered by both private instructors and police departments.
- A unique Portland accommodation - a converted 1953 British double-decker bus that serves as a boutique rental in someone’s backyard.
Should workplaces stock the overdose reversal medication naloxone? Why some advocates say yes
The opioid crisis has held America in its grip for decades, but signs of improvement are starting to show.
Data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control & Prevention revealed about 30,000 fewer overdose deaths in 2024 compared to 2023.
- 2023 Deaths = 110,037
- 2024 Deaths = 80,391
- Decrease of 26.9%
While there’s no single known reason for that reduction, many experts believe increased availability of naloxone, also known as Narcan, is a big factor. The medication can rapidly reverse an overdose from opioids such as fentanyl, heroin and prescription pills.
In March 2023, the FDA approved naloxone for over-the-counter use.
Since then, schools, libraries, public transit and some airplanes have begun stocking it.
Now there’s a push to expand access further by adding naloxone to first aid kits in the workplace.
Why experts say young adults face highest risk for intimate partner violence
Intimate partner violence impacts families, friends and likely someone you know.
More than 61 million women and 53 million men have experienced intimate partner violence in their lifetime, according to the CDC.
The agency says it’s important to discuss signs of abusive relationships with pre-teens and teens because that’s when many people first encounter intimate partner violence.
How self-defense classes teach women to protect themselves with physical, mental preparation
Lexi Arnold, a women’s self-defense trainer, focuses on helping participants overcome the freeze response during dangerous situations.
Arnold developed her approach after experiencing two assaults as a teenager, including one at age 16 by a friend who forced himself on her.
“My goal with my self-defense classes is literally to be able to fight instead of freeze because it’s a mindset thing,” Arnold said.
Arnold said she froze during her first assault but fought back during a second attack by a boyfriend. She gave him a black eye and escaped the situation.
“I teach kind of like what I did,” Arnold said, emphasizing that education about recognizing threats is as important as learning physical defense moves.
Double-decker bus gets new life as a tiny home for rent
In a city known for its creative repurposing and unique accommodations, one Portland resident has taken the concept to new heights with a 1953 British double-decker bus that now serves as a one-of-a-kind rental unit.
Whit Scott, the owner of the converted bus, has transformed the vintage vehicle into a boutique lodging experience that sits in his backyard, offering guests something far beyond a typical hotel stay.
“This is a 1953 British double-decker bus from Manchester that made its way from England to the United States in the 70s when it became mine. I converted it into a rental unit and now it sits in my backyard,” Scott explained.
The transformation from food cart to accommodation required significant effort and vision. After eight months of dedicated work, Scott was able to start welcoming guests to his unusual lodging option.
The results have exceeded expectations, with visitors consistently impressed by the final product.
