Honeybee colonies face unprecedented losses as 2025 becomes worst year on record
Those berries you love with your breakfast or those almonds for an afternoon snack wouldn’t be possible without bees. But there’s a crisis in the hives.
Experts say the pollinators are dwindling at an unprecedented rate, with reports indicating 2025 is on track to be the biggest loss of honeybee colonies in U.S. history.
The crisis is threatening the entirety of the food supply, with potential shortages and higher prices on the horizon.
Remembering the BP spill that killed 11, devastated the coast 15 years ago
On April 20, 2010, the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig exploded and then sank in the Gulf about 41 miles off the coast of Louisiana.
It would later be recognized as the worst oil spill in U.S. history.
It took 87 days to cap the BP-operated well, during which time millions of barrels of crude poured into the Gulf and coated miles of Louisiana’s coast.
Among the hardest-hit areas was Cat Island, a string of small land masses about 30 miles south of Baton Rouge.
70-year-old survivor lives to support those battling prostate cancer
A 70-year-old prostate cancer survivor dedicated his retirement to helping men living with prostate cancer find a support system by sitting outside an elevator at a Urology Center in Charlotte.
“Nobody talks about prostate cancer. Men don’t want to talk about it. Why? I don’t know. But they don’t,” said prostate cancer survivor Bob Lane.
Lane was one of tens of thousands of men who are diagnosed with prostate cancer every year.
“Over 300,000 men are expected to be diagnosed with prostate cancer this year, and approximately 5 million men are currently living with a diagnosis of prostate cancer,” explained Chesapeake Urology Director of Minimally Invasive Surgery and Robotics Dr. Benjamin Lowentritt.
In North Carolina alone in 2025, more than 11,000 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer, and more than 1,200 will die of the disease. But the death rate decreases significantly the earlier it is detected.
