Shower and thunderstorm chances return Thursday

We’ve been rain-free so far this week, but that’ll quickly change as we head into Thursday. The same system that brought us the rain late last week and this past weekend, finally moves overhead tomorrow, bringing one final round of rain before it finally moves east of Central Texas. Today was the set up day. South winds pumped in more moisture, which we saw in the extra cloud cover across the area. Scattered light rain showers are forecast to build in after midnight and into your Thursday morning commute. We’re not expecting any thunderstorms for the morning. Outside of rain chances, look for cloudy skies and patchy fog with temperatures down into the mid to upper 50s. Once that first wave of rain moves out, we should see a lull in activity late-morning into the early afternoon hours, but additional scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected for the afternoon and evening. Outside of rain chances, expect cloudy skies to continue throughout the day Thursday, with highs warming into the mid 60s to near 70°. During the afternoon and evening time frame, we could see a few stronger storms develop in our area. All of Central Texas is under a Marginal Risk (Level 1/5) for a stray strong to severe storm. Now, in any stronger storms, hail, gusty winds, and heavy rain will be the concerns. Keep the rain gear close by and have a way to receive weather alerts as everyone will have a chance for showers and thunderstorms Thursday, but the most favored locations for multiple rounds of rain, and possibly heavy rain at times, will be near and especially east of I-35. On average, we’re expecting near a half-inch of rain, but we could see isolated higher totals within any thunderstorms that develop in our area. Look for higher totals east of I-35 and lower amounts the further west you go.

Outside of a few lingering showers and storms Friday morning, we’re expecting pleasant and quiet weather for the majority of the weekend. After the isolated rain chance east of I-35 Friday morning, some sunshine is expected for the afternoon. Breezy northerly winds are expected to end the week, but there’s not any significantly cooler air that’ll be moving in with those winds. Morning lows look to start out in the 50s through the weekend with highs climbing into the upper 60s and low 70s Friday afternoon and we’ll likely see a repeat of those temperatures through the weekend too. One thing we’ll see increase over the weekend will be the cloud cover. Partly cloudy skies Saturday will turn to overcast skies on Sunday… But the cloud cover returns just in time for our next storm system. Another round of showers and storms are set to return late Sunday night into Monday as a cold front works its way through Central Texas. With this looking to be an overnight and morning set up, that should limit our severe weather potential, but it’s something we’ll be monitoring over the next few days, but we could see another quarter-inch to half-inch of rain with that system. So again, we’re expecting another round of beneficial rainfall starting as early as Sunday evening into Monday early afternoon before things dry out for the rest of the work week. We could maybe see a chance for a few showers Wednesday, but chances are only 20%, but outside of that, most of next week is looking rain-free. Temperatures will fall from the 70s Monday, down into the 60s Tuesday, but warm right back up into the low to mid 70s for the remainder of the work week. We look to have a nice stretch of spring-like weather heading into the holiday weekend.
