For most in Central Texas, it was a nice and quiet start to Mother’s Day weekend. We have been tracking isolated storms moving in from the west during the late afternoon and evening hours today… But much better shower and thunderstorm chances are expected to arrive on Sunday. So unfortunately for Central Texas, Mother’s Day 2024 is looking a bit soggy. Widespread showers and storms are expected to move across Central Texas throughout the day on Sunday. Some storms could be on the strong to severe side, and could produce quarter-size hail and some gusty winds, but the widespread concern for our area Sunday will be the threat for flooding. A Flood Watch is in effect for Central Texas from 7 AM Sunday through 1 PM Monday, as rounds of heavy rain are forecast to move through. Widespread rain amounts of 1″ to 3″ is looking likely for Central Texas with isolated amounts up to 4″ possible. Forecast models are hinting at the heaviest rain falling near and east of I-35… But due to all the recent rain we’ve had throughout the month of May so far, any additional heavy rain can agitate flooding across the area. With the increased risk for flooding and the possibility of a strong to severe storm in the area - Sunday, May 12th is a First Alert Weather Day for all of Central Texas. Prepare for those Mother’s Day plans to be impacted by showers and thunderstorms! Have ways to receive weather alerts and never drive through flooded roads! Click here for a full look at what we’re expecting for our First Alert Weather Day on Sunday.

Rain chances are increasing due to an upper-level storm system and a Pacific cold front. The storm system approaches Sunday, which is what increases rain and storm chances for Mother’s Day. Now, the front itself is set to slide through on Monday, and depending on the timing of the front, and where it’s located during the day, shower and thunderstorms chances will be possible across Central Texas mid-morning into the afternoon. Right now the highest chance for rain and storms Monday will be for our southern and eastern areas. There’s also the possibility for a few strong to severe storms with large hail and gusty winds. Rain chances should wind down by Monday evening. With more heavy rain possible Monday, the flooding concern will continue into the start of the work week. As far as temperatures go for Mother’s Day, Sunday looks to start out in the low 60s with highs only in around mid 70s for the afternoon. Despite having a “front” move in on Monday, with more westerly winds forecast to move in behind the front, temperatures look to warm back into the mid 80s Monday afternoon. Our forecast dries out for Tuesday behind that front, but we’re tracking another chance for storms by the middle of the week as another cold front tries to move into Central Texas. Rain chances increase late Wednesday into Thursday. Right now, we’re monitoring the possibility of severe storms during that time. More heavy rain could be possible too. Temperatures throughout the week also look to be warm and very spring-like. Highs will be in the mid 80s Tuesday and Wednesday, dropping a little Thursday, but climb right back up Friday into next weekend. We could have highs in the low 90s towards the end of next weekend into the new work week! Humidity will also be on the rise throughout the week! May is definitely here in Central Texas! Remain up to date with the forecast as our weather pattern remains active!
