Warm and humid with storm chances Monday
Memorial Day is a First Alert Weather Day
Morning clouds give way to midday and afternoon sunshine with highs that will warm into the mid-to-upper 90s! Heat index values may not only approach but will likely exceed 100° in some spots.
The latter half of Memorial Day weekend will be less than ideal for outdoor activities, and Memorial Day Monday is a First Alert Weather Day. We’re gearing up for what’ll be a very soggy week of weather that kicks off with a few scattered showers and storms Sunday afternoon mainly near and east of I-35. Rain chances Sunday are only near 30% during the daytime hours with highs in the low-to-mid 90s, but rain chances climb to near 50% overnight Sunday into Monday. We’re expecting thunderstorms from Oklahoma and North Texas to sink into the area overnight, likely after midnight, and move through pre-dawn Monday. Overnight storms should be on a gradual weakening trend, but they still could contain strong wind gusts and potentially some hail too.
Although the overnight round of storms should depart around sunrise Monday with likely dry weather returning Monday morning through around midday, a strong cold front is set to move in Monday afternoon and will likely kick up widely scattered to numerous strong storms. Timing of the storms is still a bit up in the air, but it’s looking like the majority of those afternoon storms arrive after 3 PM and may take a good chunk of the evening hours to move through before departing around or slightly after midnight. Central Texas is under a level 2 severe weather risk with hail and strong wind gusts being the main severe storm hazard.
We’ll have to contend with continued storm chances through the remainder of the work week as the cold front stalls across the region and keeps the atmosphere unsettled. Specific timing of the rest of the work week’s storms is unclear since each round of storms will have an impact on the next round, but one or two rounds may move through each day both during the daytime hours and potentially at night too. Occasional severe storms are likely, but widespread severe weather chances are mostly going to stay confined to Monday.
Temperatures will be cooler than average all week long because of the clouds, moisture, and rounds of rain, and highs say in the 80s behind the front.
