It’s beginning to feel a not like Christmas...

It’s hard to believe that after starting out the work week with low temperatures in the mid-20, we’re going to kick off the weekend with near-record highs! Christmas isn’t canceled, I promise, but any hope of Christmas feeling weather is. Over the course of the next about two weeks, we only have one day with near-average high temperatures and one other day with near average morning lows. Other than that, it’s all warmth all the time!

Today is the “near-average high temperature” day and that’s largely due to the influx of clouds. While we’ll see some sunshine filtered through cloudiness today, it’s going to be a mostly cloudy to overcast one. The clouds have helped our temperatures to stay higher overnight with out-the-door temperatures in the upper 30s and mostly low-to-mid 40s. Despite the cloudiness, highs today will still be able to reach the upper 50s and low-to-mid 60s which is about where we’re supposed to be this time of year. South winds will make a return today too with gusts as high as about 20 MPH.

The south winds today will start to pull some moisture into the atmosphere and there may be just enough moisture and lift for some light sprinkles to form. Yes, you read that right. The only chance for rain we’ll have over the next at least week-and-a-half is pre-dawn tomorrow and tomorrow morning mainly east of I-35. These light showers are possible from roughly 3 AM through 9 AM and may only amount to a few hundredths of an inch of rain if even that. Wednesday will otherwise be another mostly cloudy day with temperatures in the low-to-mid 50s out the door settling in the mid-to-upper 60s late day. There should be some returning sunshine west of Highway 281, so temperatures in Mills, Hamilton, Bosque, and San Saba County could briefly reach the 70° mark in the afternoon.

The influx of moisture unfortunately won’t be tapped into by an arriving cold front Thursday. Thursday’s front will actually be just a few dozen miles away from Central Texas late Wednesday, but it won’t actually start pushing through until Thursday. Tuesday’s and Wednesday’s south winds pull up enough moisture to bring us a warm Thursday morning but not enough to give us any rain. Temperatures in the upper 50s and low 60s out the door Thursday morning will peak in the upper 60s and lower 70s even despite the cold front pushing through during the day. Extra sunshine will help to warm us up ahead of the front and we likely won’t see temperatures drop more than 5° behind the front as it pushes it. It will be a breezy afternoon, though, as north winds gust as high as 30 MPH.

Thursday’s front is a nothing burger. Yes, it will change our temperatures Friday, but the change is brief and only brings our morning temperatures close to average! We’re out the door Friday in the mid-to-upper 30s and will settle in the mid-60s late-day. South winds make a big return Saturday and will help to boost our temperatures to near records in the afternoon. We’re forecasting a high of 78° which is the current record high for the day set in 1978. As the breeze dies down Sunday, we’ll see highs drop into the mid-70s where they’ll stay for much of next week. We’re not forecasting a record high for Christmas Day, but Thursday’s forecast high of 79° is close-ish to the record high of 82° set in 2021.
