WHITNEY, Texas (KWTX) - Whitney ISD says a bus carrying elementary and intermediate school kids slid off the road on Wednesday afternoon, but says there were no major injuries.

“I want to thank all the first responders who were at the scene. We had emergency personnel from the city, county, and state. Very professional. Very helpful. And they were very, very good with our kids. They couldn’t have done a better job,” Todd Southard, Superintendent at Whitney ISD, said.

The district says, despite no major injuries reported, some of the kids had some bumps and bruises, but were more scared than anything.

Southard said he is proud of WISD employees who showed up on site and did an exceptional job.

In response to why some parents have not been contacted yet, Southard said, “We’re in the middle of it. It’s an all-hands-on-deck type of situation. While contacting parents is certainly a priority, it’s not our main priority. Our main priority is making sure the kids are okay and taken care of.”

“There are processes and procedures that we have to go through, as do our first responders. So it takes time. It is slow, but it is methodical. When we do contact parents, we want to make sure we have the correct and accurate information to relay to all of you.”
