Salvation Army, TXU Energy kick off summer box fan drive
WACO, Texas (KWTX) - Summer has officially arrived in Central Texas and with that comes potentially dangerous temperatures.
The Salvation Army of Waco and TXU Energy kicked off their “Biggest Fans Fan Drive” on Tuesday, June 18, at the Salvation Army Family Thrift Store. The drive will provide box fans to families in need this summer.
U.S. Congressman Pete Sessions is leading the initiative. Sessions and TXU Energy presented a check to the Salvation Army for $1,000 to purchase the first round of box fans. The goal is to receive at least 100 additional fans from community donations.
“It’s a delight to do this every year,” Sessions said. “But we are really doing this because of the community partners, people who gather to help their neighbors and other people in a time of their need.”
Representatives from The Salvation Army said that nobody should have to choose between putting food on the table and paying the electric bill.
“Beginning late May, we have an increase in phone calls and walk-ins for fans,” said Renee Rains, The Salvation Army’s Social Services Manager. “Last year we received over 100 calls requesting fans. It’s heartbreaking to know that people are hot like that. But we don’t want to turn anyone away this year. We need to help them all.”
The fan drive will continue throughout the summer. TXU Energy and The Salvation Army are calling on the community to help them reach their goal.
Box fans can be dropped off at The Salvation Army Family Thrift Store at 4721 W. Waco Drive.
