Killeen ISD holds 18th annual freedom walk honoring the victims of 9/11
KILLEEN, Texas (KWTX) – Community members, veterans and local first responders came together for Killeen ISD’s 18th annual freedom walk at Killeen High School on Wednesday, September 11.
The walk began with a video tribute where local leaders reflected on that day 23-years ago and concluded with a ‘ringing of the bell’ ceremony. This ceremony is used by firefighters to commemorate a line-of-duty death.
The walk wasn’t just about remembering the victims of 9/11. It was also about honoring their family members.
“We celebrate the heroes of 9/11, the first responders and the soldiers,” Killeen ISD Director of Community Relations Angenet Wilkerson said. “Their families are also heroes.”
Alongside the walk, many of Killeen ISD’s other campuses held freedom walks through hallways and other classroom activities focused on honoring local heroes.
“We made a promise to never forget,” Wilkerson said. “I’m hoping that we still take a minute on September 11th of every year to commemorate what happened that day.”
