Fans react ahead of Texas A&M and Texas Longhorns game after 13-year hiatus
COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KWTX) - After 13 years since their last meeting, the Texas Longhorns and Texas A&M Aggies reignited their rivalry when they played at Kyle Field Saturday night.
The rivalry began in 1915 and was played every year until 2011 when the Aggies departed the Big 12 for the SEC. It has historically been played during the week of Thanksgiving and is often associated with the holiday by fans.
“There’s no Thanksgiving without the Texas, Texas A&M Rivalry,” said James Leyva, a longtime Longhorn fan who has been a season ticket holder since 1998. “Weather it’s Thanksgiving night, or Friday the next day, this is what the state of Texas needs and football is king in Texas.”
As the two largest colleges in Texas, this game has always drawn a lot of attention. Many fans say they have family members and friends on both sides.
“Most families have both A&M and TU people in their family,” said Wyatt Knippa, a senior at Texas A&M. “Just being able to be friends and family throughout the year but once this game hits it’s all competition.”
Texas ended up getting the win 17-7 after a dominant defensive performance where they did not allow a single offensive score. With the win, the Longhorns secured a spot in the SEC title game against Georgia on Saturday, December 7, a likely a spot in the College Football Playoff.
The Aggies end the regular season 8-4 under first year coach Mike Elko.
