WACO, Texas (KWTX) - Around 20 children with the Hewitt Community Church spent their Saturday interacting with seniors at the Brookdale Lakeshore Senior Center today.

The residents took the time to share their stories with the kids. Many of them do not receive a visitor every day, making visits like this all the more impactful.

“The day becomes monotonous sometimes,” said Heather Gillaspie, the Executive Director at Brookdale Lakeshore. “Having these little bright spots just means everything to them.”

The idea to serve at local senior centers came from a trip to Dallas last year where the group volunteered with the non-profit Dallas Metro. That trip was such a success with the kids that they decided to find ways to serve their community locally.

Rachael Kurgan, the Children’s Pastor at Hewitt Community Church, said events like this serve an important purpose; to show the kids that just because they are young does not mean they can’t make an impact on their community and show love to their neighbors.

“The best way to love people is to show God’s love to them, even if it is just having a conversation with them,” Kurgan said. “So, it’s for the kids to know that there are ways that they can give back to the community just being a kid and we can show God’s love to others through even just having a conversation with people.”

The event was a hit with both the children and the residents. We were told the group hopes to return in the future.
