Driver arrested after high-speed chase and crash in Belton
BELTON, Texas (KWTX) - On Wednesday evening, July 2, 2025, a high-speed chase through Belton ended with the arrest of a 31-year-old man after a pursuit involving multiple law enforcement agencies.
According to the Bell County Sheriff’s Office, deputies first spotted a vehicle near FM 2484 and Interstate 35 around 7:25 p.m. When officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop, the driver, later identified as James Welborn, refused to stop and sped away. The driver continued northbound onto the main lanes of I-35 before exiting through the median in South Belton.

The pursuit continued to the 2600 block of Leroy Lane in Belton, where Welborn attempted to make a U-turn in a cul-de-sac. During the maneuver, he lost control and struck an electrical box. Fortunately, no power outages were reported, and Oncor was notified of the damage.
Welborn was taken into custody without further incident. He has been booked into the Bell County Jail for Driving While License Suspended with no insurance. Authorities say the vehicle was reported stolen earlier that day.
