Burleson Police Captain retires after 36 years of service

BURLESON, Texas (KWTX) — Captain Melvin McGuire retired from the Burleson Police Department after more than 36 years of service, the department announced.
McGuire was honored at a retirement celebration attended by family, friends and coworkers.

During his career, McGuire served as a patrol officer, narcotics investigator, detective and supervisor before spending his final decade as captain over the Operations Bureau, the department shared.

McGuire was promoted through the ranks, serving as detective corporal and detective sergeant, where he supervised five detectives and two civilian staff members. He was promoted to captain in 2015, according to the department.

As captain, McGuire led the Operations Bureau, overseeing patrol, negotiations, traffic, bike patrol, SWAT and the Strategic Response Team. The department said he helped build the foundation for the Strategic Response Team through staffing and leadership decisions.

McGuire received numerous awards during his career, including Rookie of the Year in 1990, Purple Heart in 1994, Medal of Valor in 1994, Officer of the Year in 1999, Master Peace Officer in 2005, Instructor in 2020 and his Thirty-Five Year Service Award in 2024, the department shared. He also received multiple commendations and community service awards.

According to the department, McGuire was known for his professionalism and respect in difficult situations, including his patience in hearing people out and treating them with dignity.

“We are proud of him, and we are excited for him, but we also recognize what we are losing. Captain McGuire carries a significant amount of institutional knowledge, and more importantly, he has been a trusted presence for this department and this city. Burleson is better because he served here,” the department said.
