BELLMEAD, Texas (KWTX) - The La Vega Independent School District held a groundbreaking ceremony for the new La Vega Early College High School, part of the school’s $93 million bond approved by voters in May 2024.

The new school will be located behind the current high school and will include a new nursing lab, welding lab, culinary labs, and two collegiate science labs.

“The support of the entire community has been just extraordinary,” said Dean of Advanced Studies Jeanne Gravitt. “We worked very hard and the community worked hard to push things that are needed for our district to continue to grow and excel.”

Community leaders, including the City of Bellmead, Bellmead Chamber of Commerce, school district employees and members of the community were on hand for the groundbreaking and tour of the renovated and expanded field house.

“This is just a tremendous opportunity for our students and means a lot to our community,” said Dean of Vocational Studies Chris Ward.

“It is going to increase the capabilities of the district and what we can offer the kids.”

The ECHS campus construction is the fourth phase of construction for the approved bond and is expected to be completed in early to mid-2027.

Other projects from the bond include expansion of Willie Williams Stadium, including a renovated and expanded field house, locker rooms and new exercise equipment. That was completed in June 2025.

Additional stadium renovations to include the press box, restrooms, concession, welcome plaza, and seating, with the projects to begin immediately after the last home football game in November 2025.

Primary and Elementary campus additions started in May 2025, construction of new Junior High classrooms, intermediate gym and weight room, which began in March and June 2025.
