Kennedy-Powell Elementary hosts mobile STEM lab this week

TEMPLE, Texas (KWTX) - Kennedy-Powell Elementary School in Temple is hosting Learning Undefeated’s Texas Mobile STEM Lab this week from Monday through Wednesday.

The mobile laboratory provides engaging, hands-on STEM experiences for students and teachers through immersive activities designed to spark interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

“We love this opportunity for our students, because we want to expose to our STEM Academy on campus,” said Catlain Melendez, Kennedy-Powell Campus STEM Coordinator. “I think it is a great opportunity for them to be exposed to different careers, throughout the experience they are going over different careers like mechanical engineering and electrical engineering, and getting them involved in STEM and how fun it is.”

This marks the fourth year of the program, and Kennedy-Powell is one of just 30 schools selected statewide out of hundreds of eligible schools that applied to host the lab.

Interactive learning experiences

Onboard the Texas Mobile STEM Lab, students solve engineering design challenges and work cooperatively on projects. The curriculum features model STEM activities that integrate content knowledge and align fully with the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills standards.

For younger students, activities are based on familiar storybooks to make learning accessible and engaging. Older students tackle real-world examples such as building circuits, engineering flood barriers or designing rocket capsules.

Two professional science educators travel with the lab to guide students through the hands-on experiences. Students from each grade level at Kennedy-Powell will rotate through the lab each day during the three-day visit.

The mobile lab represents a significant opportunity for Temple ISD students to engage with advanced STEM concepts in an interactive environment that extends beyond traditional classroom learning.
