China Spring ISD hosts substance abuse prevention assemblies for students and families
Steered Straight speaker addresses substance abuse and suicide prevention

China Spring, Texas (KWTX) - China Spring ISD(CSISD) is taking proactive steps to address critical youth safety issues and on Thursday, October 9th hosted several comprehensive prevention assemblies for students and families.
CSISD presented assemblies for students in grades 6th through 12th. The sessions focused on fentanyl awareness, substance abuse prevention and suicide prevention. Guest speaker Michael DeLeon from Steered Straight Inc. led the educational sessions. The nationally recognized organization educates students about vaping and drug dangers while promoting healthy lifestyle choices.
“Teenagers are very impressionable and it is good for teenagers to hear the truth and not what they think is the truth from Instagram, Snapchat and what other adolescents are telling them,” said Meghan Harvey, China Spring ISD School Counselor. “We just want them to know the truth about what they are putting into their bodies and help them understand there are better ways to cope with life’s difficulties.”
The student assemblies provide age-appropriate information about serious substance use risks. Officials particularly emphasized the growing fentanyl threat in communities across the country.
Parents and guardians can attend an evening assembly from 6 to 7 p.m. at the China Spring Middle School Performing Arts Center. Families will hear directly from Steered Straight representatives and learn practical strategies to support their children in making healthy decisions.
The comprehensive approach combines student education and parent engagement. District officials recognize that prevention efforts work best when families and schools collaborate to create supportive environments for young people.
The assemblies were made possible by the China Spring Education Foundation.
