Hewitt, Texas (KWTX) - The McLennan County Veterans’ Association honored local veterans Wednesday with their annual Vets Fest luncheon, bringing together dozens of veterans, friends and family for a barbecue fundraiser at VFW Post 6008.

The event serves as a crucial fundraising drive for the grassroots organization, with all proceeds supporting the group’s year-round veteran activities including the Annual Memorial Day Ceremony, Veterans Day Parade and Flag Retirement ceremony.

“It is a fundraising drive, we are selling big ol’ plates of BBQ with all proceeds going the MCVA for funding the Veterans Day Parade, Memorial Day events and other veteran charities,” said Austin Parker, president of the McLennan County Veterans’ Association. “We are a grassroots organization, we are not tied to any big national organization, this how we fund everything.”

The Texas Society Daughters of the American Revolution, Henry Downs Chapter, volunteered to serve the meals featuring brisket, sausage, beans, potatoes and other traditional barbecue sides.

The McLennan County Veterans’ Association relies entirely on community support and local fundraising efforts to maintain their veteran support programs throughout the year.
