WACO, Texas (KWTX) - Volunteers from the City of Waco joined future homeowner Jonisha Majors to raise the walls and build the exterior of her new home during the Raise the Roof project that began Monday morning.

The home is being built with funds donated by State Farm, SouthState Bank, and the Waco Association of Realtors.

“It is always good to see the community come together and work side by side with Jonisha,” said John Alexander, Executive Director, Waco Habitat for Humanity. “She was out here along with the mayor working together and that’s what we are made to do, help each other out.”

Majors, a self-employed beauty technician, has worked since May 2024 to complete the sweat equity hours and New Homeowners College program required to purchase a home. She and her five children will live in the 4-bedroom, 2-bath home that they will purchase at cost through a zero-interest mortgage.

Partnership builds 24th home

The Raise the Roof project is a partnership between Waco Habitat, the City of Waco, and local donors to build a home with a low-income family. The first Raise the Roof project was held in 1999. This year’s is the 22nd Raise the Roof project and the 24th home built through this partnership.

Waco Habitat for Humanity builds strength, stability and self-reliance through shelter. Since 1986, Waco Habitat for Humanity and its volunteers have built 189 new homes and repaired over 630 owner-occupied residences in McLennan County. Waco Habitat homes are sold to homeowners through a zero-interest mortgage.
