KILLEEN, Texas (KWTX) - Army veteran Derek Gonzalez received a ceremonial check recognizing a $22,000 Housing Assistance for Veterans grant that funded critical home repairs to his Killeen residence.

The Federal Home Loan Bank of Dallas and First National Bank Texas presented the check at Gonzalez’s home. The grant covered a new roof and siding through the HAVEN program.

“When you have issues with home or anything you need, we just didn’t have the money”, said Derek Gonzalez, Retired Army National Guard. “By some miracle this program found us and helped us. I can’t thank them enough.”

HAVEN provides grants for home modifications, housing construction and homebuyer down payment assistance to help veterans, reservists and service members who have a service-related disability. Gold Star Families can also use the program.

The Federal Home Loan Bank of Dallas allocated $1 million for HAVEN grants this year and increased the maximum individual grant to $25,000.
