Wildfire risk in CTX goes up as we head into winter months, Temple FD prepares
WACO, Texas (KWTX) - As we head into the winter and our rain chances slow down, wildfires are more likely.
Texas A&M Forest Service says Central Texas is drying out, but they are watching for strong winds that can spread fires fast.
“It just pushes the fire further and it can get in the different types of vegetation quicker and so we have a shorter response period rather than if it’s moving slower,” Reilly Ruggiero, a Wildland Urban Interface Coordinator with the Forest Service, noted.
Temple fire says they are watching the weather to see if they need more staff for red flag days.
Santos Soto with Temple Fire says they are training firefighters to clear brush in case they need to jump into action and prevent a fire from spreading.
“Those wildland teams are working, preparing, doing more techniques with actual saws that they are using or the power equipment that they are using, more so on the tactics of either removing the vegetation or moving some of the timber that might be burning at that time,” Soto explained.
First responders remind everyone that if you are outside with anything metal, remember if it can cause a spark, it can start a fire.
